Kent Ford & Quinn Daily
Class Outline
Day 1
9:00-6:30
- Input contact information into computer (name, ACA number, address, phone, email address)
- Introductions: Name, Paddling History, Why you are taking this class
- Powerpoint Lecture: History of paddle sports, Statistics (number of paddlers / rafters / canoeists), ACA Background, Levels of Certification, ACA Pamplets & Brochures,
- Instructor Criteria (click here for ACA link)
- Safety & Rescue (prevention)
- Overall Paddle Sport Knowledge
- Teaching
- Paddling
After a quick overview of these categories, we worked in teams of three to break one of these categories into specifics as a brainstorm. We wrote down our ideas and then shared out to the rest of the group. Kent then revealed the following posters that he had created for each of the four instructor criteria:

- Lunch
- River Time: We put in at the shop and paddled upstream. Along the way, we stopped and reviewed sweep strokes, forward strokes, boat tilt, sculling, side slip,
- Drills included paddling on edge (with a level 3 tilt) on both sides of the boat as you carve a turn. Then "turning down the volume" from level 3 to level 2 to level 1 and carving a turn on the other side. Next, we transitioned to the same drill but only paddling on the inside of the turn.
- We then were filmed on our forward stroke and as we completed the boat tilt / paddling drill described above.
- Just before we got out of the river, Kent filmed us rolling (both C to C and Sweep Rolls).
- At the shop we debriefed and reviewed footage of the forward stroke. Each student was analyzed by the team. Kent also showed some footage of paddlers with excellent form (great torso rotation, extension, etc).
- Check this amazing website for slalom technique and stroke drill videos.
Day 2
9:00-6:30
- Mini Lesson 1 (Helmet & PFD) *For each mini-lesson, the presentation lasted around 5-10 minutes and an immediate debrief by the team followed. We touched on presentation style, information covered, recommendations or additions. Click here to see an outline of how to do a mini lesson.

- Go to River
- We drove to the Riverhouse Hotel and walked our boats upstream to the race put-in.
- Focus was modelling and advanced technique (we spent time in teams explaining how we would teach the following skills to beginners - ferrying, leaving an eddy and paddling across the river to catch another eddy). Then we practiced the concepts. Key terms included "SAT" or Speed, Angle, Tilt. Another acronym is "MATS" or Momentum, Angle, Tilt, Stroke
- Lunch
- Mini Lesson 10 (strainers and river bends)
- Mini Lesson 11 (rocks)
- We then walked our boats back up to the put-in and worked on some additional drills including the side slip in current, peel-outs / eddy turns paddling with a level 2/3 tilt and only paddling on one side,
- Next we paddled down to the lower half of the "race course" site and did a practice run in which we had to catch four eddies. After our practice runs we were filmed. As we completed this course, we tried to focus on stroke efficiency, good forward stroke technique, and edging the boat.
